Transcript
Who signs?
Leila Mansour: Layla wants two days off in June. Her request would go to nobody.
Mariam Saleh: Then that's this morning — time off, attendance, a coach, and a desk phone.
Lina: Layla's third week. The work tab is where the company writes down who she works with, and who signs for what.
Lina: Work information: where Layla sits, who she answers to, and who approves what.
The work tab
Lina: The work tab opens with a row of actions — transfers, pay changes, letters — that later chapters use.
Lina: Then her role in one line: title, department, office, and how long she's been here.
Lina: Her reporting line, drawn: her manager, Layla, and her team.
Lina: Her right to work: visa and work permit numbers, and the days left on the visa — the file, in chapter six, keeps the documents behind them.
David: And the commute — is that the distance from chapter two?
Lina: The same one: her home's point to her office's, with a rough journey time.
Two lines to the top
Lina: That reporting line runs all the way up: Layla, Amara, Operations, the chief executive.
David: And Mariam, in the same office?
Lina: A different line: Mariam reports to Leila, and Leila to Elena, in People.
David: So they share an office, and not a manager.
Lina: And the line only says who Layla answers to — not who signs her leave, or who manages her attendance.
Lina: Those are separate fields, further down this tab.
Work information
Lina: Below, the fields behind it: her title and position,
Lina: her department,
Lina: her manager,
Lina: and her office.
David: Employment type says 'employee'. Didn't we set full-time last week?
Lina: That was employee type — the company's own list. This is the legal relationship: employee, contractor, intern. Two questions, two fields.
Work contact
Lina: Work contact: her email and her mobile came with the hire,
Lina: but there's no desk line yet.
A desk line
Lina: Mariam clicks the field and types the Dubai office number,
Saved
Lina: and saves it — one field, no form.
Who signs for what
Lina: Now the approvers. Her expenses already go to Amara, her manager — the hire set that.
Lina: Her coach defaulted to Amara too.
Lina: But nobody owns her record in HR,
Lina: nobody approves her time off,
Lina: and nobody manages her attendance.
David: So a leave request in June would go…
Lina: Nowhere. It would sit, waiting for an approver who doesn't exist.
Five jobs
Lina: Five fields, and each one is a different job.
Lina: The expense approver signs her claims — Amara, already.
Lina: The time off approver decides her days away.
Lina: The attendance manager looks after her check-ins and her hours.
David: And HR responsible?
Lina: Owns the record itself: its changes and its reviews.
Lina: Last, the coach, for her questions.
David: And three of the five have no name against them.
Pick a person
Lina: Mariam opens time off. The list is everyone at the company with a login.
David: Only people with a login?
Lina: An approver has to be able to open the request and answer it. Someone without a login never could.
Type a name
Lina: She types a name,
Time off: Amara
Lina: and time off goes to Amara, in Toronto.
David: Why not someone in Dubai, in her own time zone?
Lina: Because leave is a question of workload, and Amara plans the team's. Attendance is different — that's checked where she sits.
HR responsible
Lina: HR responsible: Mariam herself,
Attendance
David: And attendance: Mariam again, in the same office as Layla.
A coach
Lina: And the coach becomes Karim, a customer success manager who has done Layla's job.
David: Is a coach an approver?
Lina: No. A coach signs nothing — it's who she goes to with questions. It sits here so everyone around her is in one place.
Lina: Four fields changed, each marked, none saved yet.
Five of five
Lina: Save, and all five are filled. From now on her time off goes straight to Amara,
Lina: and her attendance to Mariam.
Who signs for what
Lina: Put together: everything Layla asks for now has somewhere to go.
Lina: Time off and expense claims go to Amara,
Lina: her check-ins and her record to Mariam,
Lina: and her questions to Karim.
David: And when Amara is on leave herself?
Lina: Then HR changes one field on this tab, and the next request goes to whoever it names.
Where she came from
Lina: At the bottom, where she came from: the application she was hired through,
Lina: her candidate profile,
Lina: and the source.
David: Why keep that on the employee?
Lina: Because a year from now someone will ask which channel found the good hires — and the answer is on each record.
Her team
Lina: And on the right, her team: the other people in Operations, in Toronto and London.
Two offices, one team
Lina: Her team, on a map: Layla and Mariam in Dubai,
Lina: Amara and Karim in Toronto, eight hours behind — every time-off request crosses that gap,
Lina: and Operations is run from London.
David: Doesn't the time difference slow things down?
Lina: A request waits for its approver's morning, not for a phone call. The record carries it across.
Where she fits
David: Work information looks like plain admin.
Lina: Until something needs a signature. Who approves her leave, her expenses, her attendance — it's all decided here.
Lina: Get it wrong, and her requests wait for someone who never sees them.
Lina: Get it right, and every request finds the right person on its own.
David: So this tab quietly runs the rest of the system.
Signed for
Amara Okafor: I see I'm Layla's time-off approver now.
Mariam Saleh: And I've got her attendance. Karim's her coach.
Lina: Next: contract and pay — what Layla signed, and how she's paid.
