Transcript

Five interviews

Lina: Tuesday the sixth of April. Five interviews on video, an hour each.

Daniel Okoro: Same questions, same order, for every one of them. We each mark alone, and compare at the end.

David: And Nova?

Lina: Nova isn't in the room. It drafted questions last week, and people chose which to keep. Today belongs to the panel.

Lina: Cost, audit and the human decision: who scored the candidates, who released the list, who made the offer — and what Nova cost along the way.

Daniel's sheet

Lina: Daniel's marking sheet, on Zeynep's slot at eight.

Lina: Four competencies, each rated against written anchors: good, good, good — and acceptable on collaboration.

Lina: His recommendation and his notes, in his own words: her collaboration examples stayed inside the analytics team.

David: And the kit's questions are one click away — but it's the competencies that get scored, not the questions.

All three sheets

Lina: Once all three sheets are in, the comparison. Farah and Mateo are level on the competencies,

Lina: and Zeynep a step behind: strong on communication, weaker on collaboration.

David: Which is the gap her fit read pointed to in chapter three — no experience yet of working alongside engineers.

Lina: The read was honest, and the panel found the same thing on its own, with evidence.

Lina: All three members recommend all three of them.

The merit list

Lina: Wednesday morning, Elena generates the merit list: thirty per cent written test, seventy per cent interview.

Lina: Farah first, on eighty-seven point two: the best test, and a strong interview.

David: Mateo had the best interview, though.

Lina: Eighty-eight — but seventy on the test, so second, on eighty-two point six. Zeynep third.

Lina: And the list isn't final yet: it waits for the selection chair, Daniel, to release it.

Every number has an owner

Lina: Look at what the merit list is made of.

Lina: The written test: the candidates' own answers, marked against a key Elena approved.

Lina: The interview: three people, four competencies, written anchors.

David: And Zeynep's ninety-two?

Lina: Isn't there. A fit read is advice to a candidate. It never enters the merit list, and nobody at Northwind has seen it.

The chair's decision

Lina: Daniel opens it from his approvals.

Lina: The note is plain: offers can't go out until he releases the list.

Lina: He can release it,

Lina: or send it back, with a reason, if something doesn't add up.

With a note

Lina: He releases it, and says why: ranked on the written test and the panel's marks, as scored.

Released

Lina: Released. Offers may now go out, by rank.

Offers by rank

Lina: Elena sends the offers: one seat, so one offer, to the top of the list,

Lina: two on the reserve list behind it,

Lina: and seven days to answer.

Decided

Lina: Farah: offer sent.

Lina: Mateo and Zeynep on the reserve list, in that order — Mateo is the one who comes next.

David: And the release is on the record: Daniel, twenty to ten, with his note.

Zeynep's file

Lina: Zeynep's file: eighty on the test, seventy-six at interview, third on merit.

Lina: On the reserve list, and told so.

Lina: There's no fit score anywhere on it. There never was.

Every decision has a name

Lina: So who decided?

Lina: Elena: scrutiny, blind; the test paper; the kit review; the offers.

Lina: The panel: every interview mark, each member alone on their own sheet.

David: And Daniel released the list, with his reasons written down.

Lina: Nova decided nothing. Everything it drafted, a person read, changed or kept.

The bill

Lina: And the bill.

Lina: Five calls in the whole round: Zeynep's CV, her fit read, the test questions, the interview kit, and Farah's prep kit.

Lina: Two cents, one, three, under one, one and a half: eight and a half cents in all.

David: For six applicants.

Lina: About a cent and a half each. And the two that concern a candidate are filed under a blind reference, not a name.

The same round, by hand

Lina: And without Nova? The same round, by hand.

Lina: Candidates type their own forms, with no fit read to guide them.

Lina: Elena writes the test questions herself,

Lina: and the panel works from the general kit, or writes its own.

David: And the decision?

Lina: Exactly the same. It was never Nova's.

On the Fusion edition

Lina: On the Fusion edition, the advert looks the same,

Lina: with the fit read locked, and a line saying what it would do.

The paper

Lina: On the paper, drafting with Nova is greyed out, and says why: it's part of the Aurora edition.

The interview

Lina: The same on the interview. Everything else on both screens works as before.

Kept, all round

Lina: Chapter one set three rules. Here's how the round kept them.

Lina: Drafts only: sixteen questions drafted, every one read by a person before it counted.

Lina: People decide: scrutiny, marks, the release and the offer, each with a name on it.

David: And on the record: five calls, eight and a half cents, all in one ledger.

An offer

Farah Siddiqui: An offer from Northwind. Seven days to answer — I won't need seven.

Lina: And in Madrid, Mateo is first on the reserve list.

Lina: That's the Intelligence series: Nova drafts, people decide. Thanks for watching.
